Testing the homogeneous synchrotron self Compton model for gamma ray production in Mrk 421

چکیده
Based on the detected variability time scales of X-ray and TeV gamma-ray emission , and the observed multiwavelength photon spectrum, of Mrk 421 we place constraints on the allowed parameter space (magnetic field and Doppler factor of the emission region) for the homogeneous synchrotron self-Compton model. The spectra calculated for the allowed parameters are marginally consistent with the available spectral information above ∼ 1 TeV reported by the Whipple Observatory in the case of a 1 day flare time scale. However, for the recently reported very short duration flares varying on a time scale of 15 min, the calculated spectra are significantly steeper, suggesting that the homogeneous synchrotron self Compton model has problems in describing the relatively flat observed spectra extending above a few TeV. We determine the maximum ratio of TeV gamma-ray luminosity to X-ray luminosity during flaring which is allowed by the homogeneous synchrotron self-Compton model for the case of no significant photon-photon absorption in the source.

Inverse Compton gamma - rays from Markarian 421 - A study of GeV and TeV emission from Mrk 421 based on Fermi - LAT and H . E . S . S . data
This thesis summarizes a senior project on the Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) Markarian 421 (Mrk 421). An AGN is thought to be the site of acceleration where gamma-rays are generated in energy jets at kpc-Mpc scales. From this mechanism, an intense flux of GeV and TeV photons is created by means of non-thermal processes, e.g. synchrotron radiation and inverse Compton. Mrk 421 is one of the most ...
متن کاملSIMULTANEOUS X-RAY AND GAMMA-RAY OBSERVATIONS OF TeV BLAZARS: TESTING SYNCHRO-COMPTON EMISSION MODELS AND PROBING THE INFRARED EXTRAGALACTIC BACKGROUND
The last years have seen a revolution in ground-based g-ray detectors. We can now detect the spectra of nearby TeV blazars like Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 out to ∼20 TeV, and during the strongest flares, we can now follow fluctuations in these spectra on timescales close to the shortest ones likely in these objects. We point out that this represents a unique opportunity. Using these and future detecto...
متن کاملObservation of Strong Variability in the X-Ray Emission from Markarian 421 Correlated with the May 1996 TeV Flare
We observed the BL Lac object Markarian 421 with the X-ray satellite RXTE and the Whipple Air Cerenkov Telescope during a two week correlated Xray/gamma-ray campaign in May 1996. Two dramatic outbursts with extremely rapid and strong flux variations were observed at TeV energies during this period. The X-ray emission in the 2-10 keV band was highly variable and reached a peak flux of 5.6×10 erg...
متن کاملThe Parameters of the Gamma - Ray Emission Region in Mrk 501
We determine the physical parameters (magnetic eld and Doppler factor) of the homogeneous synchrotron self-Compton model allowed by the observed X{ray to gamma-ray spectra and variability of Markarian 501 during the 15{16 April 1997 aring activity. We nd that, for 20 minute variability, a magnetic eld of 0.2 G and a Doppler factor of 20 could t these observations. We take account of photon-phot...
متن کاملHadronic Production of Tev Gamma Ray Flares from Blazars
We propose that TeV γ-ray emission from blazars is produced by collisions near the line of sight of high energy jet protons with gas targets (“clouds”) from the broad emission-line region (BLR). Intense TeV γ-ray flares (GRFs) are produced when BLR clouds cross the line of sight close to the black hole. The model reproduces the observed properties of the recently reported very short and intense...
